[va-bird] Bobolinks displaying near Taylorstown, Loudoun Co

On my USGS Breeding Bird Survey Route this
morning from Taylorstown to Oatlands the most
exciting birds were 3 male bobolinks displaying
in the grassy fields of Waterford Downs on
Loyalty road (route 665)about 1.3 - 1.5 miles
from Taylorstown. What a great sound they make!
You can see a farm pond down below a barn
(Waterford Angus Farm?) at the bottom of the
hill. The bobolinks were very noisy a couple
hundred yards away from the pond on the downhill
side of the road. Since the protocol for BBS
routes allows only a 3 minute stop every 1/2 mile
I don't know if there are other bobolinks in the
area. Perhaps someone would like to go out
tomorrow and do a more thorough survey. It's
supposed to be a gorgeous day. This whole
stretch of road from Taylorstown to Waterford is
still great habitat for them unlike many of the
other sections of this BBS route which have been
filled with huge homes. This is the second time
in my 5 (?) years of doing the BBS that this same
site had bobolinks. Another site further down
the road had dickcissel a few years ago but I
could not find any this year. I wonder if more
careful searching will find any. Another good
area to look might be along route 15 between 50
and Oatlands though this is an extremely busy and
loud section of road.
Totals from the survey will come in a later
e-mail if I can get the data entered before I go
to Tanzania with students on Tuesday 8>D.

All the best
Fred
