VA Birders,
The 7 NVBC members who took part in our Lucketts field trip in Loudoun
Co. today found 52 species of birds, including at least 3 Bobolinks. The first
2 birds (all were males) were seen in farm fields on Rt. 662, just east of Rt.
658 (the 2nd road which goes off to the right if you are heading east from
the Lucketts Community Center at Rts. 15 and 662). The 3rd bird was seen by 3
of us on Rt. 661 on the fence along the driveway leading to Chapel View Farm (I
think that's the correct name), which is on the left just a short distance
along the road after you turn right on Rt. 661 from Rt. 662 (going east from
the
center) at the first road which turns off by the Presbyterian Church.
Other highlights of the trip included at least 60 Purple Martins at the
"Martin City" just across Rt. 662 from the church, a Willow Flycatcher on Rt.
658, just se of Rt. 15, and 4 Grasshopper Sparrows, 3 of which were in the same
field with the flycatcher. This is the field with the rock outcroppings, on
the south side of Rt. 658, where 10 or 15 years ago we used to find Upland
Sandpipers.
