William Leigh and I found a total of 10-12 Bobolinks between Leeds Manor road
and Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co.
6-8 were in the fields on Leeds Manor Road (both sides of the road), 1/4 mile
SW of Hwy 17, past the first curve, near the pasture
(there is a small pond to the SW). Also seen perching there (an odd place for
one) was a single Osprey.
Later, we found 4 more in a field, just to the south off Hwy 17, on the
entrance road that leads into Sky Meadows SP (just south of
the Ranger's house).
All birds were singing males. They were fairly active territorially, but not as
active as I've seen when they are on their home
breeding territory (I suppose they practice a lot as they travel north). At any
rate, they should be easy to find.
We owe our find to a fisherman/birder we met at Thompson. I'll be sure to thank
him the next time I run into him.
