Hola,
There were at least six singing and displaying male, and three seen female
Bobolinks along Harrison Road this morning near The Plains, Fauquier County.
The fields are certainly within what is suitable breeding habitat for them,
that is until they are cut. Bobolinks are rare breeders in Fauquier (I know
of none, which means little), thus it would be good if these fields were to
remain uncut for another month or so. There was also a singing Savannah
Sparrow on both sides of the road, and I may have seen a distant Vesper
Sparrow in
the dirt field at the east end of the road, also in pretty decent habitat.
Harrison Road is reached via I-66 to the Old Tavern/The Plains exit (Route
245), and taking that south to Harrison Road (Route 750).
Other stuff of note today was a lingering White-crowned Sparrow, two drake
Ring-necked Ducks holding tight at Airlie, more Bobolinks at Airlie, and a
Traill's flycatcher that sang a song that was a good fit for the first part of
Willow, and the second part of Alder. Seven very pretty Least Sandpipers were
on a sandy bank in a pond nearby.
Cheers,
Todd
