I'd appreciate hearing from others who might be monitoring bobolink
nesting in Virginia. I am tracking one property near Front Royal that
has supported substantial numbers of nesting bobolinks for the past 4
years.
The birds return each year during the last week of April and leave
sometime in August. I estimated last year that over 20 males were
present; I am not sure what this translates to in terms of adults given
the nesting system of this species. I am trying to assist the landowners
in expanding the area on this property where they nest given that hay
production is the major crop.
Other grassland birds nesting here include eastern meadowlarks,
grasshopper sparrows, savannah sparrows and possibly vesper sparrows. In
2001 and 2002, dickcissels also appeared to be nesting among the
bobolinks.
