In about 9 hours of birding around Newport News and Gloucester this
weekend, we somehow missed out on BLUE-WINGED WARBLER. So imagine my grin
when one was singing from atop my neighbor's tree this morning as I stepped
out to walk the dogs. That's two years in a row I've seen a BWWA in my
"backyard."
After a weekend like this one, I can't help recall the conclusions of a
recent scientific report based on Breeding Bird Survey data (BioScience
magazine, April). They found that resident US and Canadian species have
declined rather sharply, as have birds that migrate within the US. In
contrast, they found that forest-dependent Neotropical migrants increased
by up to 20 percent over the time series. Some good news.
