Well, since my excited post about the bluebirds
at my place and their interest in the new box, a
pari of house sparrows have apparently decided
that they'd like it, too, and have started
dragging straw into it. I know they are often a
problem with bluebird boxes, but I didn't have
any of them last year--just a pair of tree
swallows in one box. They are helpful in keeping
the sparrows away, so I was glad to have them.
But they aren't back yet this year.
But what can I do to discourage the sparrows?
Should I just keep clearing out the box and hope
they'll give up in time for the bluebirds and/or
swallows to move in? Or is it better to leave
them for now, since they might come back later
anyway and rout the bluebird family?
