Are you looking for a way to get more involved with conservation?
The Virginia Bluebird Society needs people to monitor Bluebird boxes =
though
out the state of Virginia. No experience is necessary! We will train you =
and
give you all the tools you will need. All that you need to do is check =
the
nestboxes along a Bluebird trial, usually ten or so boxes, once a month, =
and
log in the results in a notebook.=20
We particularly need volunteers in the Mason Neck and Mt. Vernon
areas of Fairfax County, where there are trails that may have to be =
taken
down, if no volunteers are found.=20
Furthermore, VBS has funds available if you are interested in
starting a Bluebird Trail. We will provide all the boxes, poles and =
predator
guards. You will need to commit to monitoring the trail, or have a group =
to
check the boxes, and agree to submit your data to VBS.=20
I have found "bluebirding" to be very rewarding. I love to watch the
weekly progression from nest, to eggs, to babies, to fledging. I always =
feel
like a proud father when "my" babies fledge! There are heartbreaks, too, =
as
babies and adults are lost to predators and competitors. I walk my =
bluebird
trail with my binoculars and find lots of great birds along the way.
Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, Titmice, Chickadees, wrens, may all use boxes =
to
nest in. But the boxes must be monitored to deter the House Sparrows, =
that
evict the native cavity nesters.=20
Let me know if you are interested or if you have any questions. Or
feel free to contact anyone of us at the Virginia Bluebird Society.
