Last Sunday, I decided to check out Monticello Park in Alexandria in the
early afternoon. A cat sunning on a large log, children throwing rocks
in the creek, and dogs chasing tennis balls kept any birds from going
down to the water at the lower end (but at least the dog owners
generally stayed within the demarcated area). I walked to the uphill end
of the park and observed a towhee, a white-throated sparrow, and not
much else. Then I was startled to hear a call that sounded a lot like
that of a blue-winged warbler. The bird remained far back in the woods
and never showed itself to me, but I heard the call about 20 times
before I left. I convinced myself itself that it's way too early for a
blue-wing, but I've just now learned of a reported blue-wing sighting in
Rockville the same day I heard the "bee-buzz" at Monticello. Hmmm.
