Among the 71 bird species that I tallied on Saturday
at Blandy Experimental Farm for Int'l Migratory Bird
Day were 2 flyover DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and a
tardy male DARK-EYED JUNCO.
Migrants and other notables:
Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 carrying prey
Am. Kestrel, 1 pair
A male dove at me a couple of times. Perhaps I got
too close to it's nest.
Killdeer, 3
Solitary Sandpiper, 3
Lesser Yellowlegs, 1
Veery, 2
Yellow Warbler, 5
Black-thr. Blue Warbler, 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, 1
Black-thr. Green Warbler, 1
Blackpoll Warbler, 5
No. Waterthrush, 1
Com. Yellowthroat, 3
Hooded Warbler, 1
Bobolink, 5
Robins, Catbirds, Starlings, Waxwings, Red-winged
Blackbirds and Grackles were the most abundant species
observed (20+ individuals each).
Other neat birds incl. Willow Flycatcher, Warbling
Vireo and both orioles.
No Soras for the second year in a row. The woodlands
were more productive for migrant songbirds than the
gardens and fields, as is typical there.
The sun never really came out. A thunderstorm in late
morning held me up for a while. I waited it out in my
car. Afterwards the birding was still decent.
