I stopped in at Craney Island in Portsmouth, Va. this morning as a brief
scouting trip in advance of a planned birdathon on Friday to benefit Cape
Henry Audubon. Shorebirds were scattered throughout, mostly in relatively
small groups of a few dozen birds. No really big numbers yet. Most common
were Lesser Yellowlegs, Dunlin, and Least Sandpiper. There was one
Black-necked Stilt in the northwest corner of the north impoundment, and a
couple of White-rumped Sandpipers at the west end of the middle impoundment,
just south of the north crossdike. Other shorebirds noted included Greater
Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, Black-bellied Plover, Willet, and
Sanderling. Ruddy Ducks were still out on the river and Northern Shovelers
were in the south impoundment. Least, Gull-billed, Royal, and Common Tern
were all present. Land birds included Eastern Kingbird, Eastern Wood-Peewee,
Blue Grosbeak, Marsh Wren and Rough-winged Swallow.
