Yesterday's blustery winds continued to produce good birding from the
Harbormaster Headquarters at Fort Story in Virginia Beach. Gannets were
most obvious, with 200 to 500 birds continuously in view. Many flocks of
Red-breasted Mergansers, Surf Scoters, and Black Scoters flew back and forth
over the ocean, while mixed blackbird flocks and Tree Swallows streamed
steadily overhead onshore. The highlight of the morning occurred when a
flock of Bonaparte's Gulls started flying by at a leisurely pace. After 50
or so Bonaparte's had passed, an adult Black-headed Gull appeared with them
about 100 ft. offshore. He cruised by again about 20 minutes later, heading
towards the bay.
