I saw two adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS this afternoon in Shirlington in
trees overhanging Arlington Mill Run (from South Arlington Mill Drive near
28th Rd S.). As I was walking away after photographing the herons, a
Killdeer flew up the run carrying an earthworm and landed on a sandbar. I
also got a fleeting glimpse of a warbler, yellowish in the side, but I
didn't get a good enough look to identify it. I thought I had the song, but
checking warblers' songs in Thayer's software turned up the Crescent-chested
Warbler as most similar to what I recall hearing. Of course, that species is
would not be found here, so any suggestions of what it might have been?
There was a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD who wanted his picture taken and an
AMERICAN ROBIN ensconced on a stump, almost like it was nesting there.
