I checked the pond behind my office building today (5/9/06) as I was
leaving (7:19pm). I was greatly rewarded with the discovery of an
immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON crouched down feeding from a small
log. It was very still and I got great looks; confirming the thin,
pointed, yellowish bill, large white spots on the wing, and overall
hunched posture.
Is this not an odd time of year to see an immature Night-Heron of
either species? THis seems either very early or very late to me.
The specific address is 7925 Jones Branch Dr McLean VA 22102. The pond
is in the way back of the parking lot and mostly surrounded by trees.
There are also several pair of Green Herons nesting in the trees
throughout the parking lot. I will check for it again in the morning
and report if it is still around.
