For those coming down to the coast for the VSO field trip today and tomorrow,
the male Black-chinned Hummingbird continues at the feeder at 9 Randolph
Avenue, Cape Charles. It was present all day yesterday, seen in the morning,
midday, and afternoon as late as 3:00 p.m., and this morning from 7:30 to 9:00,
always in the vegetation around the feeders in the side yard. It feeds in the
blooming red Salvia (Pineapple Sage) and visits the two feeders fairly often,
especially earlier in the day. It perches in the low Buddleia (Butterfly
Bush) and concealed in the sage, where it's still possible to see from the
porch.
Feel free to stand on the porch to watch for the bird (just mind the windows
and railings - it's an old house!). It's fine to come into the b&b to use
the facilities (second door on left inside) - Santa Claus promises to bring
switches and coal to anyone tracking in mud, however!
I don't have any further word on bluebirds or Cave Swallows, but I expect
there should be at least a few swallows still present around Kiptopeke,
especially near the area where they're doing construction on the new cabins.
have a good birding weekend,
Ned Brinkley
