The seven BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS previously seen at Back Bay NWR are
in C-Storage Pool NOW! (10:30 a.m. on 7/27). C-Storage Pool is located
along the East Dike about 1.5 miles from the visitor parking lot. The ducks
are loafing in a spot not 100 feet from the road and are highly visible
(right now).
I did a survey of all the impoundments yesterday, keeping a sharp eye out
for the BBWD and never saw them. Today, my nephew called me from the tram
to report the BBWD. I went to the site to confirm his observation, and as I
expected, he was quite right. The tram leaves every morning at 9:00 a.m.
from Little Island City Park and drives along the East Dike to False Cape
State Park, returning around 12:45 p.m. There is a fee. For more
information about the tram, please call 757-426-3643.
Back Bay NWR is open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after
sunset. The East Dike is open for foot and bicycle traffic (and the
once-a-day tram). The West Dike and the cross-dikes are closed to prevent
disturbance to migrating shorebirds and other birds. For more information
