This morning with the temperature at 39F here in Norfolk I filled our bird
feeders and sprinkled a little seed on the ground. I heard the Red-breasted
Nuthatch which has been frequenting our yard as well as a singing Pine Warbler.
I went back in the house and from the window I started searching the pines and
hollies for the nuthatch. There were the several actively-feeding Ruby-crowned
and Golden-crowned Kinglets which the nuthatch generally ran around with, but I
couldn't find the nuthatch. Then I saw a bird creeping along a branch and I
thought I had him. However, it turned out to be better than the nuthatch; it
was a female Black-and-white Warbler. She stayed around for quite a while
feeding with the kinglets and the chickadees. I never did see the nuthatch.
