I roamed through various counties north and east of my home today (15 August),
working on various county lists and ending up in King George Co. in the late
afternoon. I won't bore anyone with the full list of birds or half-dry ponds I
saw, but highlights included a Black Tern just downstream from the US 301
bridge over the Rappahannock River on the King George Co. side of the river.
Also there were a few Sterna sp. terns, an Osprey (local resident, I think),
and Laughing Gulls. A mixed group of swallows over the James River at the VA 45
bridge (Cumberland/Goochland counties) included several Banks (+ Barns, Trees,
and 1 Purple Martin). Solitary Sandpipers were seen along the edges of small,
partly dry ponds in Cumberland and Hanover counties.
The Farmville (Prince Edward County) water treatment plant's settling pond
provides some habitat for shorebirds - normally scarce in this area. Yesterday
the only shorebirds there besides Killdeer were single Spotted and Solitary
sandpipers. Earlier in the week (on 12 Aug) 3 Great Egrets were there but I
didn't see them yesterday.
