The Black Rail was being semi-cooperative again Tuesday afternoon/evening
atHuntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County.   It first started singing at
about6:15 pm and continued until after 7:15 pm, the time at which yr obsr
departed.    It was not seen before my departure; maybe it showed itself
later.  I'm sure others will post.   A few observations  - when the song was
first heard, it was VERY faint and sort of tentative.  As the hour
progressed, it became more assertive and louder, but still didn't seemed to
be sounding off full-throat.  It was very hard to hear at first.   It was
singing both a three-part and two part song; Peterson describes it as
"kiki-doo" or "kiki-krrr" or "kitty-go."  The third note is of much lower
pitch than the first two.  It was also singing a "ki-doo" version.    The
bird is in the same spot:  take the first left on the boardwalk, and start
listening.  It was at the spot where the boardwalk widens.  Tuesday night,
itwas inside the circular area created by the boardwalk.  It seemed to be
inside a bunch of cattails, which is surrounded by lower vegetation and
smallsloughs of open water, perhaps 20 - 30 feet off the boardwalk.    Kurt
Henschen Alexandria,
