A run along the W&OD Trail on Friday, March 24 found many towhees singing along
the entire distance from MP 16.5 east to MP 12.5. No sign of we vireos, common
yellowthroats, or even pine warblers this day. Pickerel frogs singing in the
wetlands between MPs 14.5 and 14.0; two weeks ago wood frogs, spring peepers
and even a few upland chorus frogs were singing in this spot. There was a
singing fox sparrow in a Virginia pine stand and backyard feeders near MP 15.0
Returning to my office near the extreme southern end of Lake Fairfax Park, had
three tree swallows overhead in the vicinity of the nest box they've used the
past three years.
Watching my feeders at home this morning, was hoping to see purple finches but
none were present. HIghlight was a adult plumaged chipping sparrow eating
millet. First one for me in 2006.
