My team found 55 species in one of the Calmes Neck sectors in western Loudoun
Co (the one that runs from Bluemont south to almost Bloomfield & Unison).
The highlights included 4 Am. Kestrels, 11 Wilson's Snipe, 10 Red-headed
Woodpeckers (& a 7-woodpecker day), 1 Eastern Phoebe (found by Ian Topolosky &
Bob Heilferty), both Kinglet species, 49 Bluebirds (the most I've seen in a
couple of years), a Hermit Thrush, 1 Am. Tree Sparrow, 9 Swamp Sparrows, 18
White-crowned Sparrows and a wild Mute Swan. Unfortunately, we missed No.
Harrier & Short-eared Owl in spite of being in excellent habitat & places they
have been seen in previous years.
Also, had a very productive early morning of owling: 2 Barn Owls (one of which
was actually seen during the day), 3 Screech Owls, 4 Great Horned Owls and 3
Barred Owls.
