[va-bird] Re: Birds Bonking into Windows

A somewhat more expensive but even more effective solution (we have witnessed no bird strikes since installing it), is the CollidEscape material sold by Large Format Digital:

This is similar to the material used on the lake-facing windows of the Patuxent Reseach Refuge visitor center near Laurel, MD. The material sticks to the outside of the window and makes the window seem opaque from outside (but you can still see through it extremely well from inside). It sells for $3/sq ft, with a portion of the proceeds going to FLAP (Fatal Light Awareness Program), a "non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the lives of migratory birds in urban areas."

I have no business interest in either LFD or FLAP; I'm just relaying info that local birders may find useful if they're having problems with bird strikes. It worked great for us!

I love watching the birds at our feeders throughout the winter, but was saddened when these little creatures flew into the window with some regualrity and died. I've placed a small gooseneck halogen lamp which I purchased for under $20 at the window. I turn it on with the light facing the feeders. This "little sun" keeps the birds away from the window. Last winter I had only two fatalities in five months of feeding my feathered friends - a 90% decrease in the mortality rate.
