VA Birders,
Today my wife and I did some species scouting for The Breaks Park CBC, which is
coming up this Saturday. We birded Poplar Gap Park near Grundy. On the way
there we picked up an EASTERN PHOEBE and a PILEATED WOODPECKER.
Once we got to the park we found the resident flock of 13 HORNED LARKS. Feeding
near them were 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. A COMMON RAVEN croaked from nearby, and
another PILEATED WOODPECKER called from the woods, as well as a NORTHERN
FLICKER. We spent about an hour birding the area, adding AM CROWS, AM ROBINS,
BLUE JAY, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, STARLINGS, NORTHERN CARDINALS, SONG SPARROWS and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS to our list.
After leaving the park we spotted a GREAT BLUE HERON near the mouth of Slate
Creek in Grundy.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
