VA Birders,
Today fellow bird club member, David Raines, and I (Roger Mayhorn), birded
the western section of Buchanan County and a part of Dickenson County. 33
species were found with highlights being a pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS
doing lots of flying and calling, giving us excellent looks when they flew
to the tops of dead White Pines nearby. They're probably nesting in the area.
A couple of PINE SISKINS, located among other feeding birds was an
unexpected find, as was a BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE in another feeding flock,
as well as a HERMIT THRUSH. Later a COOPER'S HAWK gave us a close fly-by.
It was nice to find 5 FIELD SPARROWS, a species that seems to be scarce in
our area lately.
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were everywhere with a few SONG SPARROWS among
them.A GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET put in an appearance, and a small flock of
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were observed feeding with some WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS on Poison Ivy berries.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
