Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory will again be collecting used items for
the Birder's Exchange, at their booth at the Festival, Oct 4-6. Bird books,
binoculars, scopes, tripods, backpacks, etc. are all acceptable and tax
deductible. We will mail them, with help from the Eastern Shore of VA
National Wildlife Refuge, to ABA for distribution to our colleagues in the
Caribbean, Central America and South America.
The Observatory will also particpate, for the 4th time, in the Big Sit! on
October 13th. We will again be at the Kiptopeke platform. It's fun, it's
free. The more people, the better. Everyone is invited! We record everything
we can see from the platform as we compete against other areas across the
country and the world. Identify warblers on the wing and birds far out over
Chesapeake Bay. We have a great location. We will also be eligible for a
random $500 drawing, made possible by Swarovski Optics. Last year's excellent
total of 73 species put us up there with the best of the other
Sitters--though it will be hard to top the Netherlands, Mexico, California
and Texas!
The Kiptopeke Challenge team birding competition last Saturday was fun, as
usual. Five teams were out, including a new team of Boy Scouts. The awards
will be made at the opening night meeting of the Festival. An amazing four
species new to the 8 years of the count were found. Thanks to all those who
helped out.
