During a before-the-rain visit to Leesylvania State Park on
Thursday, I encountered a Great Crested Flycatcher trying
to deal with a large wasp. It was clobbering it on a branch
but appeared uncertain as to next step. It flew to a nearby
branch, then back to the "killing branch". Perhaps it was not
sure the wasp was really dead and safe to eat? Plumage
suggests it was a juvenile still learning its trade as a "flycatcher!"
However, this species eats a wide variety of large insects.
