Yesterday, Saturday the 23rd, I had 2 more HERMIT THRUSHES in the woods near
the abbey, setting a new late record for our location. I also had our first
SCARLET TANAGER of the season, as well as 2 more OSPREY successfully fishing
meals out of our ponds.
Today, Sunday the 24th, I found a CATBIRD, some BLACK-THR. GREEN WARBLERS and
OVENBIRDS along the river, and then I walked down the river to see if any
Winter Wrens were still around. I didn't find any, but in an effort to be
thorough I climbed down for the first time a very steep cliff along the
waterfalls, and while doing so found two large eggs hidden in a crevice formed
by some large rocks. The eggs were white with chestnut coloured blotches, and
were about the size of very large chicken eggs. The nest was only a small pile
of grape vines, broken into four or six inch long pieces. I don't have ready
access to Arthur Bent's series, so I cannot tell what bird they belong to. Does
anyone know?
