Let me chime in here with a few thoughts. Speaking of only visual means of
recognition between birds of the same species there are couple more factors
that
I am aware of:
1) Behavior rituals, especially in the mating season
2) Keener vision of birds vs. man may allow the aves to "visualize" very
different field marks.
3) Proximity to the individual being be observed is important as well. We
must use magnification optics while the birds must be relatively close with the
ability to get much closer in order to visually distinguish info about the
other. Ornithologists are able to see some of these in the hand differences as
previously mentioned in the field and in the museum collection.
Each of these ideas can be applied to distinguish species and gender in a
very broad sense and none of these ideas are exclusive of the ones you put
forth
but rather an extension of them..
