Hola,
Tuesday morning was the highest count of Purple Finches I've had in my yard
since the winter of 1997-1998. I had over 100 at my feeder at once, and who
knows how many more in the trees away from there. Many of the brown ones are
starting to show their true colors, and are done dressing like girls.
I also had legions of robins in a mad frenzy devouring holly berries. I
have lots of holly on my property, and the ones right around the house tend to
all produce berries. I've remarked all winter why nothing had eaten them, as
usually I get an influx of robins and bluebirds that strip these trees in
early January. This year the few resident hermit thrushes must have thought
they hit the jackpot. Certainly today's robins did. I suspect they'll be
picked clean when I see them tomorrow morning.
Other than that, nothing new. The resident phoebe is singing his little
head off, but hasn't started working on a nest (or if he has, he's no longer
doing it on my shed).
Cheers,
Todd
