VA Birders,
After visiting Craney Island on Wednesday, I went to the Northern Neck,
where I spent the night at the relatively new Holiday Inn Express in Kilmarnock
(rates are lower on weekdays), and I had dinner at Lee's Restaurant in town
on Rt. 3 (good food and quite reasonable prices). My plan was to spend
Thursday morning hiking and birding the trails at Belle Isle State Park, and
then to
drive home in the afternoon. Unfortunately, shortly after leaving Kilmarnock,
I found myself in a deluge, with rain so heavy I could hardly see where I was
going. After reaching the park, it was still raining heavily, so I mainly
birded from my car. I was pleasantly surprised to find some nice shorebirds in
the pools which had formed in the field across from the park office. These
included:
Semipalmated Plover - 2
Killdeer - 1
Lesser Yellowlegs - 3
Solitary Sandpiper - 3
Least Sandpiper - 2
Pectoral Sandpiper - 3
I also saw a Blue Grosbeak, which was still singing.
