[va-bird] Belle Isle State Park, Lancaster Co.

VA Birders,

After our Chincoteague weekend, Gordon Knight, Mari Noster, and I spent
Sunday night on the Northern Neck, at the Best Western in Warsaw. On Monday
morning, when it was very cold and blustery, we decided to check out the
relatively new Belle Isle State Park in Lascaster Co., as none of us had been
there before. It is a lovely park, located on the Rappahannock River between
Warsaw and Kilmarnock, just off Rt. 3. It is listed in the new "Virginia
Birding and Wildlife Trail, Coastal Area" booklet. The first birds we saw on
entering the park were 1,000 or so Canada Geese in a field. We only saw
about 25 species of birds, since it was too cold and windy to walk the
trails, but we talked to the chief park ranger, who told us that the park has
a lot of Wild Turkeys (they were probably hunkered down, trying to keep warm)
as well as Bald Eagles. The Rappahannock was mostly frozen, so we only saw a
few ducks, including about 6 Hooded Mergansers. We hope to go back and
explore the park some more when it gets a little warmer.

You might also be interested to know that when we were headed home on Rt.
17 that afternoon, we passed a field with thousands of Canada Geese and
hundreds of Tundra Swans between Tappahannock and Port Royal in Essex Co.
