[va-bird] Be on the lookout...

Greetings,
The following comes from Paul Lehman in New Jersey, who has as good a grasp
on weather and it's relationship to bird movements as anyone.  Last year, just
after predicting in a similar fashion that there should be Cave Swallows
around, unprecedented numbers of them were all over the East Coast and
elsewhere.
Virginia still doesn't have great photo or video documentation of one, and
this could be the weekend for a few to be around.  The mention of an
Ash-throated
Flycatcher is also a bit juicy.

We could still use a few more souls down on the Eastern Shore this weekend to
participate in what could be a great birding weekend.  Contact me if you'd
like to be involved in the rarities roundup we're putting together.

From Paul:

NJBIRDS:

This is a different sort of post to NJBIRDS, as I am going to predict a
future rare-bird occurrence rather than report on a recently discovered
bird!  I think there is an excellent likelihood that Cave Swallows (and
perhaps an Ash-throated Flycatcher or two) will be found this weekend. A
pronounced cold front is forecast to have arrived by then, with much
colder temps and NW winds on Saturday into Sunday. This follows the
prolonged warm spell with continuous southerly flow of some sort that
many of us have been having the past week. The next day or two has some
rain and continuing south and southwesterly flow ahead of the front,
which should help the process along. Swallows may start to appear
Thurs/Fri in the eastern Great Lakes region, and on Sat/Sun (possibly
late Fri) in the Eastern Seaboard states. So get out and check your
favorite swallow spots: coastlines, rivers, lakes, and ponds when the
cold air and NW winds arrive!
Also, given the prolonged mild period with southerly flow, there has
very likely been a "penned up" migration of regular short-distance
passerine migrants, owls, and hawks, so the weekend should be good for
those as well.
