This morning at Huntley was magical: a little fog, scattered clouds for an
interesting sunrise, and some great birds. Despite the rain last night, it
certainly appeared that some birds moved.
Only after almost two weeks of May has it begun to feel as if early
migration is over. Friday at White Oaks Park I heard the first PEWEE and
saw the first significant push of REDSTARTS, with four singing males. A
BLACKBURNIAN and a RB GROSBEAK added to the fun. At Huntley this morning,
the trend continued. It was my first morning with more BLACKPOLLS than
YELLOW-RUMPS. The north end of the Woodcock Meadow had a nice assortment of
birds including a BAY-BREASTED, MAGNOLIA, 3 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 2 CANADA, and 2
RB GROSBEAK. Other goodies elsewhere included BLUE-WINGED, 5 REDSTART,
MARSH WREN, SWAMP SPARROW, 3 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. A total of 16
warblers species (including the entertaining CHAT show), and 65 species.
White Oaks Park also a Canada, and several chestnut-sided and redstarts, as
well as a single blackpoll and magnolia.
