The regular monthly bird walk at Banshee Reeks today, led by John Drummond, and
sponsored by the Friends of Banshee Reeks and the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy,
saw 38 species of birds of which the highlights were a Bald Eagle, 4 (possibly
more) Brown Creepers, and two Fox Sparrows (the first of the season for most of
us). We would have had a seven-woodpecker day but were unable to locate a
Red-headed. A short visit to the very full Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation
Project on Oatlands Mill Rd afterwards netted a Great Blue Heron, a couple of
Black Ducks, lots of Mallards and Green-winged Teals, 16 Buffleheads and
several unidentified silhouetted ducks.
For any of you who may be int'd the Audubon Naturalist Society is sponsoring a
1/2 day trip to the Banshee Reeks area next Sunday (11/16) morning. We will
meet at the gate to the preserve on The Woods Road at 8:00 am.
