Hi all, Wed. was by far the best day we have had so far at Occoquan. We
banded over twice the
number of birds than any other day this season. We had our first of the
year GRAY CATBIRD,
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NORTHERN WATERTHUSH and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. The day
started well
with 2 WILD TURKEYs who were roosting above the banding station. They flew
off in great
indignation and lots of gobbling came from the woods during the early
morning hours. We
banded another WHITE-EYED VIREO, another WINTER WREN (several more were seen
but not caught) and recaptured our second 8 year-old WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
banded in 2001. The YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS were singing like crazy and we caught and banded at least five of
them. (Suzanne
has the figures.) The day ended with the discovery of a swarm of honey bees
about 10 feet
off the path to nets 1 and 2. They were too involved in their own concerns
to pay any
attention to us and we were able to get by them without problem.
Unfortunately, a good-looking
Red-wing Blackbird managed to bounce his way out of the nets while we were
contemplating the
bees. You win some, you lose some.
Cheers, Joanna
