The feeders here at the house in Cape Charles have hosted three Baltimore
Orioles since last Saturday, and I was surprised to see 4 at once this morning,
one a very pale bird easily confusable with a young female Bullock's or
Bullock's x Baltimore hybrid.
These birds are attracted to the nectar of the 5 hummingbird feeders we've
had out continually since late September (they prefer the larger feeders) but
also to halved oranges and clementines (they won't take grapefruit) set out for
them. If you have leftover citrus, the orioles really brighten a winter
backyard!
Recent bird news includes the imm. male King Eider yesterday on Island 3 of
the CBBT (right at the rocks' edge) and a male and female-plumaged Harlequin
Duck, on Island 2.
Have a marvelous Thanksgiving,
Ned Brinkley
