[va-bird] Baltimore Oriole in Jamestown

Today my husband Lee and I birded the Colonial Parkway from Yorktown to
Jamestown. At our last stop, at the Jamestown Campground beach (the last right
on Rte 31 just before you reach the security booth for the Jamestown ferry), we
found an adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE. In case anyone else wants to check it
out, it was in the trees directly behind the port-a-potty and dumpster. We were
able to get excellent looks as it moved around in three partially-leaved trees.

Other birds in that same area included PURPLE FINCH, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER,
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS.

Along the parkway we spotted two BALD EAGLES and thousands of RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS in flight (at Jones Mill Pond). The RUDDY DUCKS ( in the hundreds)
and BUFFLEHEADS have taken up residence in the usual places on the York River,
along the Cheatham Annex overlook, where we also saw BROWN PELICANS, FORSTER'S
TERNS AND COMMON LOONS.

Good birding!
