I have a large tree that died over the past winter. it's about two feet in
diameter and about 40 feet high. Are there any "habitiat" reasons for not
cutting it down? I was thinking of cropping it at about 20-25 feet, and leaving
about three feet on each of the five branches that would remain. I think I read
somewhere that this would encourage woodpeckers (and others?). No birds are
currently nesting in the tree. Any ideas or resources you can direct me to?
We have a quarter-acre lot in Arlington that backs to a substantial neighboring
yard, and two of the other four trees of equal size in the yard are mature and
in decline.
thanks,
