I visited Back Bay NWR yesterday while on vacation at Virginia Beach. Lots of
walking. Notables were a few migrant passerines (blue-winged warbler, prairie
warbler, black-and-white warbler, yellow-billed cuckoo, yellow warbler) 8 white
ibis, and a nice mix of shorebirds, including both dowitchers, both yellowlegs,
pectoral, stilt sandpipers, least, semipalmated, spotted, and solitary
sandpipers, black-bellied plover, willet and sanderling. This past week at
Sandbridge, where we stayed, we saw most of the terns (least, common,
Forster's, Caspian, royal and sandwich), red knot, whimbrel, collared dove, and
a northern gannet cruising the beach. I also saw an osprey dive into the ocean
and come up with TWO fish, one in each talon. Cool.
