Just a note to followup the posting of Dirk Huntington on March 19. Yesterday
during a regular survey of the beach at Back Bay NWR in Virginia Beach Dorie
Stolley and I counted 7 Piping Plovers. That's a significant number but more
importantly four of them were on the beach reached by the beach access trail
just east of the headquarters. Very easy to get to. Dorie tells me that she
often sees the American Bitterns previously reported by Dirk along the marsh
trail just back of the headquarter. I didn't check that out, but on my way out
of the refuge there was an American Bittern in the ditch along the west side of
the entrance road. The dike roads from half a mile south of the headquarters
to False Cape are currently closed, but as you can see there are opportunities
to see some neat birds on that part of the refuge which is accessible.
Cheers,
Bob
