To all in search of the elusive Virginia Red Knots:
Finally, Red Knots were seen within easy walking distance of the Visitor
Center at Back Bay NWR. Sixty-two, including 2 banded ones, were feeding on
the beach at low tide today (12/28) about one mile south of the Visitor
Center/beach trail. For those who really like to work for their Knots,
another 16 were seen 6 miles further south, on False Cape State Park. There
was a third banded one in the False Cape group.
Back Bay NWR is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Center is
open from 8 am to 4 pm. It will be closed January 1 and 2.
Yours,
Dorie
P.S. Try to time your visit around the low tide (+ or - 2 hours) for best
chance of seeing them.
Dorie Stolley
