This morning Wendy Ealding, Paul Bedell, Jerry Uhlman, and I started off West
of Emporia looking for the Sparrow in the same spot where Todd Day had one
singing about 3 weeks ago. We met up there with Mike Iwanik, but
unfortunately neither heard nor saw the bird. The main singers were Field
sparrows and Eastern Towhees. The 4 of us drove around for a while looking at
similar habitat, but heard nothing even close. Then we went back to Emporia
and started East on Rt. 730 - it was quiet (not unexpected for late July) and
the swamp along the Meherrin River was the driest I've ever seen it. We
finally found our first Kite, an adult, soaring over the trees just South of
the Steel Bridge in the clearing right before the NC line (a usual spot). The
only other Kite we saw, again an adult, was at the intersection of Rt.s 615 &
Rt. 58 - low and right over us. We also visited Taylor Millpond, where Todd
saw 3 Anhingas - we found none.
