AN INVITATION TO A SPECIAL GARDEN TOUR
Saturday, July 24, 2004 1PM-5PM
Tour local gardens to see Audubon at Home in Northern Virginia. Talk
with homeowners and property managers to learn how they use
environmentally friendly gardening practices to create healthier
habitats for humans and wildlife.
Sponsored by the National Audubon Society
and Fairfax Audubon Society
with the support of the
Natural Resources Conservation Services
The objectives of Audubon at Home in Northern Virginia are to preserve
and enhance existing habitat by educating and assisting homeowners,
property managers, and community associations to maintain their
properties in an environmentally friendly manner, e.g., by practicing
water conservation, removing invasive plants, landscaping with native
plants, reducing or eliminating fertilizers and pesticides, and
protecting water quality.
When you take the Audubon at Home tour, you will see native plants used
in a variety of settings, from wild to formal; examples of plantings to
control storm water runoff and soil erosion; different methods of
composting; rain barrels; water features, and gardens specifically
designed for butterflies and birds. Tip sheets and other educational
materials will be available at each location. Homeowners, property
managers and volunteers will be on hand to direct you and answer
questions. Our hope is that you will be inspired to adopt these good
gardening practices on your own property.
