[va-bird] Re: Article on Decline of Grassland Birds

Jay,
        Thanks for forwarding this good article.
        One of the problems with conservation in recent decades is that
most of the emphasis has been on preserving forests and not meadows and
other open areas which are favored by grassland species. Robert Askins
makes this point very well in his Restoring North America's Birds:
Lessons From Landscape Ecology. He also explains why it is not correct
to assume that these types of open areas were not present to a
significant degree in the eastern United States prior to the widespread
eradication of forests following colonization. Highly recommended.
                                                                Gerry=20

Subject: [va-bird] Article on Decline of Grassland Birds

Hello VA-Birders,

Below is an article about a study performed to assess the impact of
highways on grassland breeding birds - a subject certainly pertinent to
especially Northern Virginia and the ever-growing traffic. It was
posted on the PA-Birds listserv. I thought you all would be interested.
