Hello, birders. I spent Sat. and Sun. morning doing
bird surveys near the geographical center of Virginia,
E of Lynchburg. My most interesting find to me this
weekend (although not actually part of the survey) was
a bird on the ground near the entrance of James River
State Park in northern Buckingham Co. I initially
dismissed the bird as a crow. It flew off when my car
approached and then called, revealing itself as a
COMMON RAVEN. I'm not sure how unusual a sighting of
this species is in the southern Piedmont but I imagine
it's farther east than expected.
I was pleased to find a few BROAD-WINGED HAWKS this
weekend, including a calling pair on Rte. 606 in
Buckingham Co. where a stream crosses the road. I
haven't been privileged enough to have this species in
Virginia outside of the mountains during the breeding
season. Although they its possible that Broad-wings
at this time of year can be late migrants, I would
guess that it's more likely that they are potential
breeders, esp. when a pair is involved.
Common birds on my surveys through forested routes
this weekend include INDIGO BUNTING, CAR. WREN,
RED-EYED VIREO, Y.B. CHAT, PINE, HOODED and PRAIRIE
WARBLERS.
