VA Birders,
The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was NOT seen yesterday despite many people
looking. The field where Ned found it has dried up and there were very
few birds there unfortunately. The bean field on the left just before
entering Kiptopeke SP had Upland and Buff-breasted SP around 9:00am but
as far as I know no Uppies were seen after that. I managed to find a
Buff-breasted SP there around noon but then I was unable to find it
again for the rest of the day. There was an American Golden-Plover
there with the Black-bellied Plovers as well.
Mike Stinson and I checked a number of plowed fields along Arlington
Road for shorebirds and found one with lots of Pectorals, Leasts and
Semipalmated Plovers about a mile south of the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper
field. We were unable to find anything unusual with them though.
I checked the pond at ramp road on ESVNWR around 5:00pm just before
heading home and found a juvenile White Ibis and a Glossy Ibis hanging
out with the Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, Canada Geese and a few
ducks. Another great day on the shore despite not finding the object of
my quest!
