The Environmental Working Group of the Virginia Wind Energy Collaborative
has completed work on: A LANDSCAPE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM - Addressing
Environmental Issues Associated With Utility-Scale Wind Energy Development
in Virginia. The document and associated material have been posted on
www.VAwind.org.
In addition to the map-based classification system, the document provides
context concerning the scope of wind development, reviews environmental
issues, identifies gaps in scientific information, and describes potential
impacts to birds, bats, and wildlife habitat that may result from
inappropriately sited wind energy projects.
It should be noted that the Landscape Classification System was a source of
disagreement between the principals of the Virginia Wind Energy
Collaborative (VWEC) and the Environmental Working Group, and that the
document is not endorsed by the VWEC principals --who have severed their
association with the Environmental Working Group and declared their
intention to release their own report and material.
Utility-scale wind energy development on our mountain ridges and coastal
areas will emerge as an important public policy issue facing the birding
community and other conservationist in Virginia. A campaign to effectively
require Virginia utilities to purchase wind energy has been initiated.
Please take the time to become informed.
