Erika Wilson and I showed up for the NVBC trip at Huntley this morning. The
boardwalk was rather treacherous when we arrived, so we took the Cedar Trail
through the woods. Highlights there were a Golden-crowned Kinglet and a Hermit
Thrush. We decided to brave the boardwalk on the way back and were amply
rewarded for our efforts when Erika spotted American Pipits on the ice in the
central pond. There were about six Bluebirds with them. Erika counted 11
Pipits. We watched them for at least 20 minutes from different vantage points
and even saw them flying several times and coming back to the same general
area. The views got better as we approached the raised ramp of the boardwalk.
Some of them were seen in full sunlight at this point and were quite close.
Great views of a life bird for me thanks to Erika!
We saw total of 33 species.
