We visited Gunston Cove and Accotink Bay from the Ft. Belvoir (east) side this
morning for a little over an hour. In Gunston Cove:
American coot (300+)
Common merganser (4)
Canvasback (2)
Lesser scaup (about 50)
Bufflehead (6)
Ruddy duck (13)
Pied-billed grebe (2)
Ring-necked duck (2)
Canada goose
There was a dearth of water birds in Accotink Bay, though many gulls were
present.
On the ground and in the sky nearby, we noted Osprey (perhaps 10), a
Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Song Sparrows (several), White-Throated Sparrows
(several), a Carolina Wren, a Blue Jay, Dark-Eyed Juncos, European Starlings,
Turkey Vultures (6), Killdeer (3), unidentified crows, Northern Cardinals,
Great Blue Herons (4), a Brown-Headed Cowbird, a Northern Mockingbird, a
Northern Flicker, Canada Geese (many), and Bald Eagles (at least 4).
