While walking my dog this morning I got dynamite views of an American Bittern
hunting, walking (what incredible feet). After I took my dog home I came back
w/my scope & watched it for at least 15 minutes.
There are two ponds on the west side of Ebenezer Church Rd (RT 779) near the
big curve (which is a couple hundred yds west of where Yellow Schoolhouse Rd,
Rt. 831) comes into Ebenezer. The American Bittern was on the far side of the
larger pond which is mostly hidden by a berm. There is a much smaller pond
right next to the road.
Besides the regulars (Meadowlarks, Grasshopper Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds,
etc.) there were also 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Solitary Sandpiper & 1 Lesser
Yellowlegs.
All of the dirt roads in this area are muddy w/big potholes & large stretches
of washed out road.
